59ab flywheel / ring gear
Did the 10" clutch flywheel have a lip on it for keeping the ring gear on? Is it necessary to have the lip? thanks

Re: 59ab flywheel / ring gear
Not certain what you mean by a "lip". If you are referring to the outer counterweight on the earlier flywheels (photo attached) then yes, you can remove that. However, be certain to have the flywheel properly balanced afterward.
The ring gear is sweated on. Nothing else holds it in place but the interference fit.

Re: 59ab flywheel / ring gear
The ring gear went up against a shoulder.

That's correct. However, the shoulder only located the ring gear, it did not hold it in place. The interference fit held the ring gear in place.

Re: 59ab flywheel / ring gear
The extra lip you speak of is on the early 9" with the weight blob around the edge, not sure about the flat 10" er's I had one with the lip broken off in many spots, some of the now deceased members advised not to use it. I think I have a pic...
Well, I could not find it. Its very thin, easy to break if you don't get the gear warm enough for maximum expansion, and try to hammer the ring off or on. Kube is correct, its not what hold the gear in place, perhaps to aid in locating it? I dunno, but not used on most other flywheels so Henry must have quit too. Can't remember if I used mine or not. There was a thread of mine with pics 5 years ago or so. |

I have cut plenty of them off and after balancing the fresh wheel, it worked just fine each and every time.
