Striping question

Want to change the color of the stripe that runs around my '36 sedan. The stripe was put on with a hand held stripe device; my question is can another stripe be laid on right over the top of it or must the old stripe be removed? If it has to be removed, how is that done without damaging the acrylic enamel underneath?

I don't think the old stripe can be removed without damaging the enamel underneath. Maybe you could top it with a wider stipe but would look weird. Also you could try a wider plastic stripe that comes in rolls of different widths. I used it on my bumper stripes and has stayed on for a number of years, still in good shape.

Was the stripe hand painted after the car was painted? or was it done when the car was painted?? If it was hand done after the car was painted a paint professional could probably wet sand and buff it out, then you can have the new stripe hand painted to the color you want.

Just Google "how to remove old pinstriping" Lots of solutions.

The car was painted first and then years later the stripe was added; am concerned that anymore wet sanding would go right into the primer. Will contact the striper and see what his thoughts are. Thanks for the help.

For what it is worth. I have used and seen many a stripper and sign painter use Easy Off oven cleaner to take off stripes and lettering on cars. And leave the paint.
Remember that the paint on the car usually has a hardener in it and stripes and lettering don't.
Maybe try it on a wheel if they are painted and stripped.

X 2 on Easy Off used it many times on my cars that I striped. But some colors are more difficult than others to remove and require more care. Start out slow and be patience. Pay close attention of what's happening to the base paint.

I have had very good luck removing art work and pin striping with "Easy Off" oven cleaner. Sounds like it would damage the over-all paint but it did not. Took about 5 Min. to soften the pin striping.

Easy-Off.......yellow can! Try a test spot first in a discreet location. Only takes about five minutes or so to soften. Wipe clear with WET (water) rag. DD
