Starter casing stuck
Hey so I'm trying to remove the starter to get it rebuilt or replace it, but I can't manage to get the starter off at all.
I've loosened the two bolts on the front, removed the bracket that keeps it secure, and the casing spins freely... but I cannot remove the casing at all. It feels like something is still holding it. Is there something I'm missing? |

Re: Starter casing stuck
Push the starter back towards the engine, it is catching on the flywheel.

Re: Starter casing stuck
The shaft from the starter motor goes past the flywheel to the Bendix drive that spins the starter gear into the flywheel from behind. You will have to jiggle and angle and twist just the right way, but it will come out.

Oh wow, you folks were right. The starter was just spinning and spinning. I started playing at it with a screwdriver and eventually it popped off. Wow, that thing's heavy. Now to figure out if I need to get it rebuilt or if there's something else causing the engine to not turn over.
