Default Roadster top rest problem

I have a pair of 28/29 brass roadster top rests I bought at a swap meet recently. They look pretty good, except for a shallow dent in one that hopefully can be removed by the plater. Anyway, I can't get the standoffs removed from the main part - none of them. I suspect the pot metal the standoffs are made from swelled some, even though they look OK. I am looking for a way to free the standoffs so I can get everything nickel plated. I though of using an acetylene torch on the top part to expand the metal a little, but I am concerned the heat might cause some damage. I don't want to damage any of the parts. If anyone has an idea on how to remove the standoff, please post a response.

Don't put heat on it
spray with lube or maybe a little coke cola and let set for a little bit and take a pliers and try twisting them. they should come off without to much problem
if you are set on heating them maybe hot water will work for you
good luck

Rusty, are you trying to save the stands? I doubt they will plate nicely anyway, so use a Dremel and split them where you can break them in halves.

The small dent can probably be filled with silver solder and filed smooth. Good find on those as I am looking for a set of decent brass ones also.

I would have answered Rusty, but all the ones I have fall out.
So,....if the Aluminum ones won't plate up nicely, machine new Aluminum
stands or Brass?

Uhh....is that correct?....are the originals "pot metal"? I thought they were
Aluminum..they feel like Aluminum?
