more floorboard questions
o.k. i'm coming along on the floorboards for my 31 pickup using the watrous plans, if i don't go blind trying to lay out all those weird 32"measurements on wood with a machinist scale. most of these measurements would have worked fine in 1/8" or 1/4" increments. now questions... there is no depth given for the parking brake cut out. the depth for the shift tower figures out to 6 1/2"(after converting to decimals and using a calculator) that is not letting the floorboard set foreward enough. what should that depth be? i know it must have taken a lot of work to make these plans, but there seems to be a few measurements over looked, and some holes i don't understand yet. lastly what do those reinforcing bars look like that screw under the floor boards? are they just flatbar or some shaped metal piece?

Re: more floorboard questions
I can't answer your question but I did notice that some of the vendors carry the reinforcement bars that rivet to the floorboards.

Re: more floorboard questions
The plywood floorboards use 2 steel bars and the forward end curves upward to help support the toe board.
The dovetailed boards use 4 steel bars, the two above and two straight ones with screws to hold the boards together. The bars are an odd size and I had a tough time finding the correct size years ago. I can measure them later. |

Re: more floorboard questions
The standard bars are 1 1/8" wide. That is a hard size to find as 1" and 1 1/4" are current standard widths. I was lucky to find enough original angles and straight bars for my 4 model A's at swap meets.

Re: more floorboard questions
how thick are the bars? 1 1/8" is a weird size, but might be cut down from wider, or get them from a supplier, the 30/31 bars are not too expensive. now if someone can help on the other measurements.

Re: more floorboard questions
If you want exact I would buy a copy of the Ford print. If not just measure a repro. You could trace one.

Re: more floorboard questions
A&L Parts Specialties sell a print of 30/31 floorboards for $1, plus postage. If you really are after exact information, order the print from them. Steve Watrous' drawings are good. I might have found one or two missing dimensions when I made my floorboards, but I remember the dimensions on the drawings being correct. One thing Steve's drawings don't have is a reference to the hardwood dowels that are installed where the clutch and brake pedal slots are to keep the thin wood from breaking off. BTW, my original metal straps are 3/16" thick and 1 1/8" wide.

Re: more floorboard questions
The drawing I have has the round cutout for the shift tower at a center of 5 1/8" back from the front edge and a radius of 1 and 11/16" for a total distance back of 6 and 13/16".
I think I have estimated the straight cut at the back to be 5 3/4" from the front edge, but if you wanted to try a little less first to see how it fit. See how these match what you would estimate from your drawing. Jerry |

Re: more floorboard questions
Steve Watrous' 28/29 drawing shows the shift tower cutout slightly off center - about 5/32". Weird! Why the 28/29 floorboard would have the cutout offset is a mystery. You would sure think the shift tower would be centered. The 30/31 floorboards have the cutout centered.

Re: more floorboard questions
If you have a 1931 Budd steel top cab, I believe that the floor boards are narrower than the standard ones. I have a Budd cab AA I remember them being narrower.
