New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
Don't worry, I'm keeping it stock.
There's no ID plate on the firewall. How do I tell which engine I have?

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
I'm pretty sure it's a flathead V8.
It looks like a 239 cid, which (I think) had a 3 3/4" throw on the crank. Are you talking about what displacement, or make and model and where it was made? Last edited by Lugnutmonkey; 08-15-2010 at 12:32 PM. Reason: Misinformation correction. |

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
Yes, it has 24 studs. Were there not two displacements available with the 24-bolt heads? How do you tell those apart?

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
The 221 cubic inch 90 horsepower motor is what your truck probably had new. It would have been painted the green colour the current motor is. There is a very small chance your truck came with a 100 horsepower 239 cubic inch motor. It would have been painted blue. The few passenger cars equipped with the larger motor had serial numbers starting with 99- and I think the pickup trucks followed the same convention. The 90 horse motor vehicles had serial numbers starting with 18-. You can find the serial number on the driver's side frame rail, probably between the steering box and the firewall.
To confuse matters even more is the possibility that a later, or possibly earlier motor, has been installed in your truck. The correct 221 motor for that year had a raised area under the intake manifold, most other years did not. The 239 motor looks the same but was originally painted blue. The 1946 to 1948 "59" series motor is a bolt in replacement with some detail differences in the block. The two easiest to spot are the cast 59 on the bell housing and continuous slope between the intake area and the timing cover area on the front of the block. The pre-war blocks have a ledge just above the timing cover you can rest a pencil on. Take close pictures of your intake area, timing cover area, and if possible the top of the bell housing and oil pan rail areas and we can be very specific what engine is in your truck. I hope this helps more than confuses! Last edited by 38 coupe; 08-15-2010 at 11:50 AM. |

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
Beautiful truck
Not a big deal, but FYI the distributor has been adapted to use a modern coil. If you want to maintain the stock look, the original style coil should be mounted directly on top of the distributor. That being said, this is a common flathead "upgrade" and there's absolutely nothing wrong with leaving it the way it is. Enjoy your truck and be proud of it. |

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
I plan on driving it many places, as I do all my toys. All show cars, but none on a pedestal.
Thanks for the info on the coil. I want to know what's authentic and what's not, but it won't matter, I only show my cars in concours, not points-judged events. In this venue I have no problem with people pointing out deficiencies. However, at shows I like people telling what they like about my toys, not what's wrong with them.

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
Another question. Why does the passenger door have a lock cylinder, but not the driver's side???

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
I believe it was to discourage people from messing with the key on the traffic side of the car. A safety issue. Dennis/Arkansas

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
Hmmmm........
Elsewhere it was posted that the reason was that the roads were muddy and the driver would lock his door from the inside, slide across the seat and get out on the clean curb, lock the door and leave. Your answer makes more sense, though.

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
And in the mud is lotsa horse poop as well. Plus on the street side you had buggys and horses rushing past that could take your door off or trample you.

Re: New guy with a '41 Ford pick-up
Barry, from what I can see, you have an original 1941 block, has the pencil ledge and the raised area under the intake, should have matching cast iron water pump pulleys, some have 3 raised marks, some do not, just should be matched. Horn appears to be a car horn, trucks should have one horn which is not the same as car, I have a 41 3/4 ton truck that I am doing a runstoration--if it doesn't have bugs on the grill I don't want it. Oh by the way NICE truck
