Default battery connections

I'm a new 1930 Model A owner. I'm am not a skilled mechanic. When I took delivery last week the engine turned over slowly (it did start but barely). After sitting for three days the battery appeared to be dead. I tested the cells with a hydrometer and all three are in the 1275 to 1300 range. When I checked the cables the ground was loose, so I tightened it. At that point I noticed the positive terminal is connected to the starter and the negative is grounded. Is that not opposite what it should be?
