Default starting problems on my 37 pick up

I have a 37 Pickup, and the battery seems to go dead after I drive it around a little bit. It will run tell I trun it off my self, but the battery is dead when I go to start it right back up again. Im a kinda new at this, so dont laugh if this is a rookie question.

is the batt hooked up + ground? do you have a working amp gage? is the generator working, is it polerised? start car pull + cable off battery, do you get a spark with every thing off? start engine, pull + cable off battery, if it keeps running the the gen is putting power into the battery, if engine dies the gen is bad

yes the battery is hooked up with + gounnd. the guage sits just above 0 at idle. when you give it gas it go's up a 1/3 of the way to 40, then drops back down to where it sits at idle. dont know about the polarize thing. what is that?

If it shows a charge when you give it the gas, it is working fine as faar as polarization is concerned. Should show discharge when you turn the switch to on position.

I would say you need a new battery.

how old is the battery and if you charge it and leave it for a week does it hold the charge enough to start the pickup
