160B rear spare tire
Did all the S/W town sedans come with a rear mounted spare, or could they come from the factory in the fender? A friend is restoring a late 31 sedan and wants to put the spare in the fender, and wondered if the rear spare holes would have been drilled at the factory and plugged up, or not drilled at all.
Thanks, Ed Saniewski

Re: 160B rear spare tire
In the fifties and continuing these days the Model A people went nuts converting their As to phoney Deluxe models and glaming their cars with adornments that were very likely not available from the factory. Wheel colors may be the most common but denied modifications confused by the factory offering as the depression brought Ford production to all kinds of promotional colors and deluxe models, some of which came with colored wheels from the factory. Rumble seats were another of the bad ideas that appeared where never before seen. The dealers got into the act, peddling side mounts and painted wheels to make a buck. Accessories were a way to pump up the price of the Ford. I bought a low mileage 160B in 1963 with the spare on the rear. The body had Dnuts to hold the tire mount. Probable that all the 160 bodies had the nuts from the factory. Out of the many Models A I've had, only Factory side mount was on a pickup, distinguished by being riveted to the frame. If it is bolted there may be evidence of modern refit. Regretably my 40B Deluxe came with a rumble seat and cowl lights, both not to my taste. More recent Model A owners are seldom pleased to hear that their glamorous car may not be authentic. Tough out there! Fred A

Re: 160B rear spare tire
180A Deluxe Phaetons came with driver side mounted spares. I have a friend with a 160B with two factory installed fender mounted spares. I will check with him on details and get back to you. They are original and later 31.

1930 Deluxe Roadster and 1930-31 deluxe Phaeton and the 1931 Convertable sedans also came with a left sidemount and a factory luggage rack.

Over the last 30+ years I've seen three Town Sedans (one mid-'30 and two '31 slant windshield) which came from the factory with a riveted side mount. The interesting thing is that in all three cases the spare was on the RIGHT (passenger) side and the cars were fitted with a non-folding luggage rack and a trunk.

Re: 160B rear spare tire
My 31 slant Town Sedan (non indented firewall) has a right mounted spare. Unfortunately I can't check it out to see if it's riveted. It has the plugged holes in the rear, but no rack. It also doesn't have the correct rear bumper.
