Fender Paint Stands
Ready to start prepping my '31 front fenders for paint.
Wondering if anyone could post any info on paint stands to hold them for this. Tried the search engine with no luck. Years ago I borrowed a homemade pair that worked really well, but these are no longer available. Thanks, Ray |

Re: Fender Paint Stands
Years ago an article in Restorer magazine had the plans for stands that fit on an engine stand that would work on '28 to '31 fenders. Built up the stands and used them to repair and get prepared for painting. Used angle iron and were curved to fit the curvature of the frame for the front fenders. They worked great as could rotate the fenders and work from both sides. Left them with the Lady Slipper A club in MN so cannot provide pictures.

Re: Fender Paint Stands
Here is another way.
I am in the process of screwing used garage door track to the ceiling joists in my new painting area. I form the door roller axles into a strong hanging hook and put the door rollers in the channel so the fenders, etc., can be painted one by one while hanging from a hook and then rolled on the track further into the shop and out of the way. I use a smaller wire threaded through a fender bolt hole to connect the fender to the hanging hook. I usually add more rod on to the hanging hook so it is easier to work with. I pull directly on the hanger with a long bent rod and move slowly so the panel doesn't swing. This makes it fairly easy to paint the panels and really nice to get the painted panels out of the way so you have room to paint the next one and so nobody bumps into them before they are dry. Re: Fender Paint Stands
I have an old front frame section I use.I've made up brackets to bolt on both the 28-29 and 30-31 fenders where the running boards fit up.Good and rigid to use for bodywork too.Another thing I always do is to paint the bottom sides first,a day, month or year before painting the top finish. That way I can concentrate on getting a good finish on the top without wondering if I got the nooks and crannies underneath.

Re: Fender Paint Stands
I always paint the bottom first. Then mask the bottom, sand the top where nessesary and paint the top.

Re: Fender Paint Stands
I am not pro at painting. I put up two 4x4 posts (about 7 or 8 ft long) with 2x4 legs to hold up the posts with a 2x4 between them. Then hung the fenders with wires from the 2x4 going between the posts. This way I could paint both sides at one time. Setup was kind of like Jim above except them hung up and down rather that flat. Hope this is understandable.

Re: Fender Paint Stands
We too have tried stands and have gone back to the "simple is better" mindset. If (y)our plans are to colorsand and buff the fender, my guys think it is easier (more productive) to paint each side individually as the paint will flow out and create less 'post paint' work (removing orange peel). We actually have a couple different jigs we have built to hold fenders but we just use bodyshop stands too.

Re: Fender Paint Stands
well it happened **right** after I gave them my number over the phone, and the multiple charges were rung up within a 10 mile radius of their location in IL, and I live in Texas so it sure as h*ll wasn't me, and I had not used the card verbally anywhere else
So you are welcome to arrive at your own conclusions. If you give your number verbally is when the problem starts. There is a ring out there, they have a way to re-write the magnetic strip on cards http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...ic+card+writer they can prolly even use a hotel key card

Re: Fender Paint Stands
I've been buying from Autobody Toolmart for years. My card number is on file there.I've had bogus charges before, but never through the vendors. It has always been through the card brokers,or the middlemen. After I renewed my Hemmings one year I started getting two monthly charges from magazines I never ordered. It wasn't Hemmings,it was the card service they used.A few years ago there was a scheme involving a couple of paypal employees, they were adding little charges to some bills, something like $1.80.I got robbed for about 3 bucks in that one.

Re: Fender Paint Stands
I agree. Paint bottom side first. Tape and mask off bottom and paint the top. It produces a much better job. The lip on the fender hides the paint line.
