water in exhust
Having a lot of water coming out of the exhaust when trying to start engine. Could it be a cracked block, crack head or bad gasket? Thanks for your imput.

Re: water in exhust
Is it condensation ? or coolant ? You will be able to smell a difference.
If you suspect a head gasket (or worse) look for bubbles in the radiator. Is it hard to start ? If coolant was getting in the cylinders, the engine would be very hard to turn over (filling with coolant) and you would likely have coolant in the oil. Good Luck |

Re: water in exhust
Depending on what you mean by "a lot", this is normal condensation of water vapor produced during combustion, especially if the motor was not run long and warm enough to get the exhaust system good and hot before shutting it down. Installing a thermostat should help, but them's fighting words for some folks.
If you're running antifreeze and it is somehow leaking into the cylinders, you'll see white smoke with sort of sweet smell on startup--until leak gets so bad there is no startup. Steve |

Re: water in exhust
an easy check for water in cylinders is pull the plugs one at a time till you find one that is snow white, that will be the cylinder that is getting water in it, water will clean all soot and carbon off the plug leaving it very white

Re: water in exhust
A gallon of water has to be a serious coolant leak. That is nearly half the coolant capacity.

Re: water in exhust
If its a gallon and the engine was previously operable then you might consider that a crack or hole has developed in one of the exhaust valve port pockets. If so, it is most likely in #2 or #3 exhaust ports, on the side nearest the center water passage. If you pull the manifold, look for the cleanest interior port surface as a start.

Re: water in exhust
wow, with that much water coming out the exhaust if there is no water in the oil now there soon will be, no matter what the cause or where its at bull the head and find it befor you get the chocolate colored oil all thru the engine and oil passages, that is a real pain to get out of the engine, with that much water i dont think its a head gasket leaking, its a crack in the engine some where, or maybe just in the head, letting the water drain into a cylinder, find and fix it befor you hydralic lock a cylinder and bend a rod

Re: water in exhust
Blown head gasket or bad crack in the head or an exhaust valve bowl.

Re: water in exhust
Have Kids? Never underestimate the possibility of a kid snaking a hose up the exhaust pipe and filling the muffler full of water as it would be held in place by the trap caused bu the exhaust pipe going over the rear axle..
You should notice losing that amount of water from the cooling system if kids and a hose are not to blame |

Re: water in exhust
My normally reliable A started leaking water from the exh.I took the manifold of and about 1 gal of water poured out.
Turned out the water jacket had rusted through into number one exhaust port. You maybe dont want to here this. Fix was , another block, Lawrie |
