speedometer niose
My speedo started to make a grinding type niose. It ebbs and flows when driving. I recently put in a new spedo cable. It appeared to have sufficent grease on the cable when I installed it. So I'm not sure if its the spedo or the cable. If it turns out to be the spedo making the noise, is there a proceedure to lube the spedo or does it need to be rebuilt??

Re: speedometer niose
is the speedo OR does the sound come from UNDER the car by the gears...that might be the problem..check that first!

Re: speedometer niose
It seems to be coming from the spedo/dash area.

Re: speedometer niose
Ok next make sure that little metal ring that slides over the cable is intact and did not break.. IF okay push the cable all the way into the speedo and tighten, BUT you can put some speedo lube down the cable first to make sure it is lubed up okay.. Try that

Re: speedometer niose
hay It sounds like the bushings in the speedo are dry and are seting up. if this is right it may soon set up. I would say you my need to have it rebuilt or get a new rebuilt. One way to tell when you unhook the cable can you turn the input shift on the speedo if not then that is it you should turn it free with your fingers. Hope this helps. jr.

Re: speedometer niose
Thanks for all of your help guys. I found complete instructions on how to rebuild and/or lube the model a spedo. It can be found at
http://www.modelahouse.com/tech/spee...r/fischer.html. For some reason the word speedometer in the web address does not spell out but prints the "...r" instead. The word speedometer should spelled out. Last edited by Dick M; 03-24-2012 at 05:01 PM. |

Re: speedometer niose
The oval speedometer isn't too bad to take apart enough to lube it. So far I haven't had to remove the bevel gears or main shaft, and I don't have the tools to do either one. |

Re: speedometer niose
Mine started squealing and 'thumping' just before it twisted off my brand new cable
The head was dry and very hard to run on a drill, I tried penetrant and lube - had to do a complete tear down and clean up and fresh lube, now it's just like new Wasn't a bad job, just take your time and lay things out like Tom's photo |

Re: speedometer niose
My speedometer did the squealing so loud I thought some thing was stuck under car, finally took the cable loose on a Model A trip, found out it was the speedometer making noise. Sent to Harry M. and re installed, no noise, looking good, Bruce
