The Ford Barn

Well, I'm home and after unpacking, running to replace a cellphone that broke Friday while loading a trailer full of goodies and then uploading and editing over 600 pictures, I'm ready for my 2011 Hershey Pictures post.

This was my 4th time at Hershey and I was once again immensely impressed with the vast array of stuff that was there. Also, always impressed by the amount of crap for sale.

If I was asked to sum up the entire week in a single picture this would be it.

That picture is representative of every single day of Hershey. It was easier to find NOS '30 Model A running boards than it was to find a cloud in the sky all week.

Here are some of my favorite things I saw.

(Notice how the driver sits in front of the engine on this T tractor conversion?)

(Notice the early '28 high rear window truck cab?)

This collection of Ford tool checks numbered 1,720 and could be bought for an even $2,000, including the drawer.

One of the highlights of the entire week was getting to be in attendance at the RM Auction both Thursday and Friday night. (thank you to those who made that happen). For those who didn't hear, the world record was set for a car auction, with a 1884 De Dion Bouton Et Trapardoux Dos-A-Dos Steam Runabout, the oldest running car, selling for 4.6 million USC (including the 10% buyer's premium). This picture is the auctioneer getting ready to hammer the car "Sold."

The week was great and went by far too quickly. A few observations.
-I thought prices were fairly reasonable. There were still the people who thought the price of rust was escalating higher than the price of gold but for the most part, prices seemed to be not too terrible.
-Always confused by the people who have the same item they have had for the past four years, that I saw my first Hershey in 2007, and they still reject my reasonable offer.
-Was it just me or did it seem like there was a joint cigar Afficianado meet going on in the fields of Hershey? Seemed like every couple minutes I was getting cigar smoke blown in my face.
-I was also impressed with the younger face of the crowd this year. Seemed like a lot more people in their 20's and 30's were walking around looking for stuff.

Wow, on the auction report!!! And thanks for the picks, I was traveling light, no camera, saw most all in your pick, save for the awesome olds seat....

Tim, You are right about the cigars.... it seemed like lots of Cigar smokers were certainly at my space in the Chocolate Field.

You got at least two photos of me (not that you could identify me even if you knew me). The cars that I drove across the stage at the RM Auction included the 1930 Model A Huckster. Driving at the Auction is a fun Hershey experience.

Had a great time! Thanks for posting the photos! I didn't notice the cigar smoke wish I did, it is one thing that reminds me of the first shows I went to in the early 1960's. Did anyone else notice all the dogs this year? All well behaved, and cared for, no land mines to step on. Too many vacant flea market spots, signs of the times I believe. Sold unwanted items, bought everything I wanted to except a race car wheel, that would have been a wall hanger anyway. Looking forward to Hershey 2012!

The early Pickups had two different styles of rear body panels. The earliest has a high window with "FORD" script above it. That was from start of production until Feb of '28. The second was a high window but without the script. This ran until June/July of '28 (Don't have the judging standards with me). After this second generation, the window was lowered a few inches and there were two versions that came after that which had different support ribbing leading to and from the window.

I don't know if this is the Ford script or not as I couldn't see.

Thank you for the pictures.. The black car with the yellow grill shell is a 1922 PAIGE ,666 Touring . A friend of mine [Charlie] owns a 1921, 666 Model too. Its a big 6 cyl. alu.body and bought it for $21,000 7 years ago. 99% nicer then the one pictured here. Price they were asking was $75,000.00 as is which had a lot of add on items with are really not correct to this car. But as they say [there's a ass for every seat. ] p.s. there are now 7 known of this model 666 but 3 of this body style. The PAIGE family had something to do with Madison Square Garden.

Peter, Didn't Charlie have another Paige, or is the 666 a replacement for it? I can't look at a Paige without thinking about him, first impressions are always lasting ones.

Actually Peter, the Graham family had ownership of Madison Square Garden. The Graham-Paige automobile company became the Madison Square Garden Corp, owners & operators. The history of the company found on the Graham owners club website,www.graham-paige.com, offers a fascinating look at the early automobile world. As much as I love the A, the 1932 Graham Blue Streak is a beauty.

[body shop owner] sold the car to Charlie "A" a friend of ours in A.A.C.A. 7 years ago .Same car different Charlie.,,, Charlie "H" bought the PAIGE somewhere back in the Mid 60's for under $10,000.00 ...Its a very nice car except that size car with only rear brakes really sucks
