Re: Cars with original radios
Wolfman Jacks 1090 AM started out as 150,000-watt XERB/XERF on 730 kHz and was located in Baja Mexico....

Re: Cars with original radios
You can still hear a lot of those big power stations late at night after the local stations go off the air.

Re: Cars with original radios
Be sure you recap your old radios before using them too much. Failing caps can take out resistors and other stuff.
I put a solid-state vibe unit in my '50, replaced a couple burnt up resistors and a few caps. Found the schematic online. Works fantastic now! |

Re: Cars with original radios
I installed this https://rediscoveradio.com/index.php...4d6cc743e8e1d7
It works great with an original 6V radio in my '39 |

It's kinda like comparing a manual underwood to an IPhone. |

Re: Cars with original radios
My original 1937 Ford radio doesn't work.
Ford V-8 music is good enough for me. |

I still love going under power lines and hearing the static. When I was kid I hated, now it take be back. We are lucky here in Denver, as he have at least 2 good AM stations and one on them is a 50's station. Got the tester a few years back for $10.00 and it came with the manual with the listing of all of the tubes. Works great. |

Re: Cars with original radios
tubesandmore.com carry the solid state vibrators. Caps are capacitors. The originals were paper and wax and weren't very good back then. Need to be replaced with modern units.

Re: Cars with original radios
Realized what I was asking after I hit send. Thanks for the direction on the solid state vibrators. While I have you here, is the Ohm rating on the speaker 4?

Re: Cars with original radios
It says: "Replace your buffer capacitor when you replace your vibrator!".
Thank you....Now all I have to do is figure where the buffer capacitor is in the radio! As to the station, let me pull the car out and see what I have the buttons set to. As we all know AM doesn't work in the garage with the florescent lights on. I set the stations while driving, so I didn't notice. Not like the new car with the selector in the steering wheel and a digital readout on the screen of the radio. The only thing in my steering wheel is the horn ring. I set the buttons by sound, you turn the search knob until a station comes on that was strong enough to last for a few miles and has the music you want. Life was simpler then, if you wanted to change the station, you reached down and changed it, you didn't ask the computer in the car to do it for you. I guess that I am too old fashioned, I just sing along to the radio, not talk to it. |

Re: Cars with original radios
Buffer caps are mounted to the vibrator pins sometimes under a metal shield. I use 1600V orange dips for the F1 radios I have done.
The 50s station is easy...middle of the dial. Haven't scanned for anything else in a while. |

Re: Cars with original radios
I envy you in the States- here in Russia we don't have any stations within the radio AM range.

The two stations are Cruisin Oldies 950 and The Rock at 93.7 (not as good as Cruisin but when Criusin has the travel show or the restaurant shows, it serves as a good back up, and is fairly strong.....until you go under power lines.) |

Re: Cars with original radios
I have an old radio that I used for parts/tubes. I would take it that you are talking about the orange and gray capacitors? I made up a tube chart for my reference.

Re: Cars with original radios
Yes to the orange but the gray one might be a coil not a cap based on how the leads exit the body.

Re: Cars with original radios
Looks to be two capacitors in series, but I could be wrong....definitely wouldn't be the first time.
