The US Marine detatchment from your embassy here in NZ cellebrated Memorial day here by joining a 13km to an elevation of 300m run organised by the Kapiti Joggers and Walkers Club. It followed the old "march route" their forebears took during WWII when training here for the Pacific campaign. Camp MCKay was home to them at Mckays Crossing 30km or so north of the capital Wellington. It is virtually in Trev 52Mercs back yard, Paraparaumu. That run was done on Sunday.

Leon Uris wrote a book based on his USMC experiences of the era and many of the places he referred to in that book ("Battle Cry") are familiar to me.

Hi Lawrie , No I haven't. I've left him alone as I imagine he'd need time to mull things over. That said he's a friend and you don't forget friends in times like this. I plan touch base soon.

THANKS OLD HENRY:

Many people think it's a holiday to start summer, while others think it is another Veterans Day.
I wish the Veterans organizations would step up and let the world know that there is a difference.

MEMORIAL DAY n U.S. holiday in May honoring soldiers etc. KILLED in WARS

VETERANS DAY n November 11,U.S. Holiday honoring war veterans

BOTH OF THESE DAYS HONOR ALL IN ITS OWN HOLIDAY
THEY ARE NON DISCRIMINATING

IMHO These holidays should be kept separate BUT HONORED each & every day.

All gave some and some gave all. Thanks from a vet for your post. We all should take a moment to remember that Memorial Day isn't just a day for mattress sales and BBQ's.

Thank you to the members of the armed forces and their families who
sacrificed so we can LIVE FREE and enjoy life..... Many people in other
countries don't get to live free, and enjoy life as we do. Thanks Vets.

I like to get to the patriotic celebration at the cemetery early enough to park Old Henry near the program where hundreds of people walk by and maybe take a peek in to see this original newspaper reporting that Germany surrendered to end WWII.

The true origination and meaning of Memorial Day: (from Wikipedia) It is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is celebrated every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day (most of us are probably old enough to remember that) and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service.

I got an erie reminder on Friday as I was trying to rush to work so I could leave early and get out of town.

I was irritated at not making the light when a white Cadillac hearse went by....in the back was a flag draped coffin.

Said my prayers and drove slowly to work with my priorities properly in line.
