What to look for in '35 trans. Inspection?
I have what appears to be a good '35 trans., are there any obvious signs to look for other than chipped or missing teeth? My intention is to sell it.

No rust, no pitting, no broken teeth, no excessive wear on the 1st reverse slider, turns smoothly and engages each gear. No broken bolt holes on the bellhousing flange and having a good usable UJ would be a plus too.
If all checks out ok then without a teardown, thats about as good an assessment you can make. Mart. |

Re: What to look for in '35 trans. Inspection?
Couple more... with syncro in neutral, push brass syncro rings to minimum, should be a gap of about 1/16, or whatever Mac's book says. Definitely not closed, or near closed.
And, with aid of skinny fingers, or screwdrivers, wiggle 2nd gear. Should be almost none - both end play & lateral. There's no real way to have a good feel on main bearings or cluster bearings. Bottom line... it's always a crap shoot. I'd also count cluster teeth (or input teeth). A 29 tooth would be a minus for me. Normal would be 28. And, sometimes you might find a Lincoln gearset. Oops... you said 35. Can't do syncro check. Look for brass or other metal particles in drain oil. |
