Love Utes, wish we had them in the SA. I would love to have a '55 Ute to match my '55 Ranchwagon.

Good utes in Oz are pretty thin on the ground nowadays but they are available. The price for a reasonable one would scare you though. $10000 for a roughy to $30000+ for a real nice one. Mine is by no means the best and has an insurance valuation of $30000. At least shipping is affordable these days.
Utes in Oz are very much a cultural thing, both Ford and Holden make some seriously tough utes these days with well over 400HP for the street. Makes them a bit of a handful without traction control.
We here in Oz would love to have your Waggon. These were super rare in Oz.
Regards

You guys may want to follow this build:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=733707 to build your own U.S. version of a UTE.

I notice that some of the model years on the web page are either miss labeled or there is a years difference between north america and OZ.
The other interesting model notable is the use of Canadian Meteor parts on the OZ cars. I think that the OZ cars are refered to as " star" models.
and yes it would be nice to have a fairlane 4X4 Ute !

Australia used cars sourced from Canada - Ford Australia is owned by the Canadian Ford Company. Our Customlines continued on from 56 through to mid 59. They all used 55 dashes except for the 58-9 which da a custom dash loosely designed on a US 56 dash. The star model was the 58-9 because of the lage star in the grille. This car used a 55 Meteor Rideau grille with 56 side chrome strips. Strangely the auto didn't bear the Customline name but wore Fordamatic badges. Autos were not introduced into Australia til 1957 and were air cooled. In 58 they went oil cooled with the same flexplate as the US 58 yblocks. All Customlines came with 272's though some 58's seem to have come special order as 292. We never got any of the good stuff. All came with single exhaust, two barrel carbs and none of the good "G" heads. Only late F600's came with the four barrels. We didn't get any of the early towering inferno Holleys.
It seems Ford Australia thought the 57 US Ford was too big for us and then they bit the bullet and released the 59 Fairlane, referred to as a Tank Fairlane. The weren't as robust on our country roads as the Customline. All our cars were four doors. A 2 door wasn't released in Oz til 65 with the local Falcon and a few Mustangs.
There ends the short history lesson.

When I lived in Mi. I used to run across a 55 (?) Ute at different places. For awhile I thought it was homemade & he did a good job of it. Later on I realized what it was. Very cool cars.
