Where to get a new generator? 59A
Just finished off my generator on this week's road trip.
I would sure rather just buy a new or rebuilt one than have to send this one of for rebuilding. Can't find on at C&G, Mac's, (they both rebuild them for $250.00) Bob Drake, Dennis Carpenter, or eBay. Anyone know where to get one ready to go?

Try Quality Power in Yucaipa, CA. 909-794-1600....Fax 909-794-3838. Family owned and operated. I bought an Alternator for my Flathead from them. Good to deal with.

Prof.
The field windings do not appear to be harmed. Armature should be checked on a growler, or replaced. New bushing, bearing and brushes. Good to go again. Bruce

Henry, I realize you'd like to keep this original, but converting to an alternator might be alittle more reliable.

WOW!. If I could get them right in Salt Lake City that would be fantastic. We actually have a generator shop here in Orem associated with Henstrom from whom I could pick it up if they have one. I'll call Monday.

Re: Where to get a new generator? 59A
Prof,
I agree with Bruce.....but I'm sure your rear cover is kaput. If I were in your place I'd find a decent auto elect shop and have the armature and fields checked. I'd pay close attention to the condition of the rear portion of the armature shaft. If you post a photo of the rear cover and the whole armature I'd be happy to send either or both 'pro bono' if I have them. Charlie ny [email protected] PS The usual rebuilds are foible filled, trust me. |

Re: Where to get a new generator? 59A
Hi Prof, When you have refitted your repaired generator, make sure you don't over tighten the belt as it would appear that has caused your commutator end housing bush to wear out. The older wide belts are not required to be as tight as 1960s to 1990s cars. Book says a 1" side movement in the belt is required. I make mine a little more at around 1 1/2". Your generator can be repaired with a replacement armature or have it rewound. Replace the end bush and front bearing as well. Make sure that bush is lubricated properly before pressing it in by sitting it upright on your thumb and fill it with engine oil and squeeze down on the top end with your other thump until the oil is oozing through the sides of the bush. Clean the generator inside and assemble with a new brush set. Good luck. Regards, Kevin.

Ed Whitney (http://www.ejwhitneyco.com/automotive.html)sells a 6V 40 amp positive ground alternator in an OEM Ford generator case. Its a well built product and worth the investment.

Re: Where to get a new generator? 59A
Got the generator fixed for $125.00 in two days by local shop that's been fixing generators since 1958. So, we're back on the road again . . . at night.

Re: Where to get a new generator? 59A
Craig, Make sure that belt is not too tight. 1" to 1 1/2" slack in the centre of the long section of the belt. That's all good news and a very good deal at that price. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Where to get a new generator? 59A
Yeah. I've got it nice and loose and made sure the rear bushing oil filler is filled.

Nice looking units. Any idea what they cost? Thinking about one for my '39.

Re: Where to get a new generator? 59A
Cost is $600-$700, quite a lot IMHO to hide an alternator in a generator case. I bought a GM alternator and painted it black for $55.

Re: Where to get a new generator? 59A
I guess I could be sitting on a fortune in '39 to '48 generators,, Following Old Henry's generator story I went looking to see what I have in stock. I could only find four, they all need rebuilding to some extent, took one of them into the local generator rebuilding shop yesterday so I would have it on hand... Also took a early V8 starter in...
I was at a farm auction in Montana a couple of years ago, bought two pallets of early V8 Ford parts, generators, starters, manifolds, etc. for $15.00... Over three hundred pounds of parts..
