Default Broken Transmission

Hi. I have a 1948 Ford. I had the car up on a hoist and noticed the trans is broken right across the mount. the trans mount was new. Any idea why the transmission would break.
It is broken right through. It drives ok . Do you pull the rear end to get the tranny out. Thanks for your help. Bill

Either pull the RE back or take out engine an tranny out as a unit. Tranny comes up through the floor inside the car. ken ct.

Good news : side shift cases are as common as heavy truck trans. I have 4 of them one is a 46 others haven't been investigated. You can have one or 3 for postage price if you want. Save your junk case for the VIN.

Could the mount possibly be welded in place? It sure is a lot of trouble to pull one.

Is it the mount, or the transmission case? Should have asked before my last post. Case is cast iron and it would be difficult to weld without it cracking more. Could be stitched.

Thanks for the help. It is the case at the mount. No leaks. I might try ro weld. Nothing to lose might save a lot of work. Just don't know my it would break . Thanks Bill

Conventional welding on the casting will cause heat distortion problems affecting bearing and shaft alignment not to mention the possibility of further metallurgical failure. The proper way would be to pull the trans, remove all parts, and either heat treat/braze or heat treat/weld the case. Since it sounds like these cases are readily available why go thru the exercise?

CRACKED and no leak, I hope there is gear oil in the gear box?? I wonder if its a casting flaw, or mark and not break ?? there is gear oil at that level, and if it can it will get out, don't ask how I know.... and yes side cases are out all over the place I have some and use them as wheel stands with plywood on both ends, and a small piece inside where I put tools and small parts, when I'm under there.... work for me ( GET-ER-DONE ) ....OLD...BILL

I've seen several cases that had slight casting flaws especially in the inner bell area around the clutch release shaft bosses. They were that way when they were new and they are still that way. Damn if they don't look like cracks too. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. When it's broken, you'll usually know for sure. If you just flat can't live with it then find another case for your piece of mind.
