Default Pop-out ignition

I have had my 1930 coupe for a couple months and have been learning a lot. I keep reading in posts and such about the pop-out ignition switch. Just what is it? Nothing "pops out" with my switch. I just put the key in and turn it. Do I not have a pop-out or is it not working correctly?

No you do not have a Pop-out from what you are saying about just turning the key. The pop-out does pop out when you turn it and then to turn it off you push it in .

Here's a late 28 pop out switch. The key turns a button. Key in vertical position, push the button in for OFF. Turn key clockwise and the button will "pop out" in the ON position. Hence the name.

Unless you want an all "original " car, you don't need one. It was also suppose to make it harder for someone to make off with your car.

The pop-out ignition switch is one of the most fun and fascinating things about the Model A.

There is plenty of information about them - and worth a read. I chose to replace my replica non-pop-out with an original of the right year. First, you may be sacrificing the accessory terminal on the replica. Second, the correct length of the armoured cable leading to the distributor is very important. Third, the pop-out may need easy but careful restoration to ensure that it is reliable. Fourth, check the inside of your instrument panel to see if it is original. Many had the pop-out flanges or lugs cut off to accept the modern replica switch.

An original pop-out is very satisfying. Turn the key and the button pops out. Remove the key and drive away. Push the button in to stop the engine. Cool.
