Re: Water pump install question
I use 'GasgaCinch' on many gaskets - it is a very thin sealer that comes in a can with an applicator in the top. I have used it for 40+ years on things like water pump surfaces, intake manifolds, etc..
RTV works fine as well (for waterpump gaskets), just don't buy the "blue kind" - looks like Hell no matter how much you wipe off! Link: https://www.jegs.com/i/SCE-Gaskets/829/G1614/10002/-1 I use RTV on the oil pan and the ends of the rear/front main rope seals. Depending on the head gasket material, I usually use spray on 'CopperCoat' on them. One some applications I use Hylomar for the head gaskets (solid copper head gaskets). Gasket sealers are one of the subjects where you'll get many opinions - and many different products and processes that ALL work . . . just pick your poison! |

Re: Water pump install question
On my 8BA water pumps I use a thin coating of PERMATEX Non-Hardening gasket sealer.
Be sure to read this thread about NOT using RTV and silicone https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=311227 Last edited by 19Fordy; 03-20-2022 at 12:18 PM. |

Anthony....Not to change the subject, but did you ever get your spindles/brakes project completed? I don't remember seeing any resolution on that. DD . |

Re: Water pump install question
DD, New info on juice brake project. While I did get the spindles reamed & KP’s fit well, I was planning on doing work in a metal pole building a friend is having built because my garage is pretty tight. But with builders being crazy busy it got postponed til April / May which puts us into May /June for a start. As I did quite a bit of engine refresh last season & don’t want to lose another season I think I’ll have some fun with it this season as is with the mechanicals which work as they’re supposed to & do the juice brake project in late fall later this year. I’ll definitely post progress when I start.

Re: Water pump install question
The one time I used grease, it leaked. Always use Permatex or like product which never leaks.

Re: Water pump install question
Never had a problem with RTV - you have to use a very thin coating

Re: Water pump install question
Hylomar was developed by the RAF to stop leaks on Rolls Royce-Merlin engined Spitfires. You could say it helped win the war.

Re: Water pump install question
Thx guys, I was leaning towards grease. It must have been assembled last build with grease, came off very easy & can barely see any residue barely had to clean & never leaked. Just putting hi-flow unit in.
Thx

Re: Water pump install question
Part of the reason that Hylomar is such a good sealer is that it never truly sets up - it remains elastic, and fuel does not touch it . . . so it is good for many things. I have it in cans with applicators as well as spray-on. I use the spray on for blown applications with 0-ringed heads.decks and solid copper gaskets - works really well. But - it is not cheap!

Re: Water pump install question
The only color I've seen was blue . . . but I've not looking to see if there were others.
