Just a shot in the dark here.....you might want to check your master cylinder to see if it's a power or non-power.If you don't have a booster you'll need a non-power M/C. I street rodded a '49 C**** pickup,disc/drum,and used a non-power M/C. It works.

Do the easy stuff first
As the previous posts , (1) You need soft linings on a un boosted system (2) Fit a vacuum booster and stay with the linings your got (3) go through the fine details of adjustment ,Radius the shoes to the drum |

I improved the front brakes on my 40 Sedan with the old school upgrade to 56 F100 fronts.
