The Robert Kearns story is encouraging and sad at the same time - Ripped off my Detroit and drove him to ruin.

Big industry has a history of working around patents. It's even harder to patent something now due to changes to the patent laws with the America Invents Act of 2011/2012. It was presented as a good thing for inventors but it turned out to be anything but.
