Back in the day had a 312 in my 51 ford the dist. hit firewall but went good ,lots of fun at the lights and night street racing. You will really like the flathead with the c4 never strip 2 nd gear LOL.
I had a choice this year to buy a 55 ford car or 56.
The 55 6 volt and guess 292 v8,and then there was what I couldn't pass up a 3o2V8 in the 56 with a fmx trans. I like it good combo

Fords without Ford engines always offended me going back to when I was a teenager.

George in Maine, that is a sweet 56. I have always liked them. When I was a teen, there were two guys in my home town that both had 55's that were hot rods. I liked them better than the Chevs.

As long as it gets me from point A to point B. Love my 4 cyl, but it may be sold. Will be looking for a f/head 37-48.

In the late 1950s and 1960s, Chevy took advantage and Ford blew it. For the average guy, it was economics. Many Chevy dealer parts departments looked like speed shops, offering racing parts developed for the Corvettes at very reasonable prices including hi-perf crate engines. The average back yard, some what financially challenged, hot rod-der with a light Ford body could put together something that could blow the doors off most of the new cars. That is where the popularity of swapping engines came from. Ford tried to catch-up later but it was too late.
So it basically came down to economics and bang for the buck. It was fun back then but I still like old Fords with flatheads and with Chevys. I also believe the hotrod era kept and preserved many, many of the old cars we have today.

Yep, I remember my friends who were "tri-five" guys in the late '50's going to the local Chevrolet dealership and getting a "Duntov" cam complete for $35. Those of us who pored over the latest "Honest Charley" catalog pricing flathead speed parts were amazed.

I remember going to the Chevy garage in 1962 with a Duntov cam with my buddy as he wanted to identify it--The parts guy looked at it and dropped it on the counter--
We called him "Cam Buster" thereafter--
And I still do not know what "tri-five" means!! HELP?

Sure you do, 55,56,57 Good years for Fords too. I love 55-7 T birds but have never owned one.

Barn Junk described the 50's perfectly. I put together several flatties in the 50's, but ended up with a sbc in my 33-3 window for the reasons stated. I still have the same 33 with a sbc. Whether you like them or not, Ed Cole designed a pretty decent little motor back when I was a kid busting my knuckles on flatties. It has lasted a long, long time.

Could be a "combustion chamber" when things start to get hot

I've been looking for a 1955 ford Club Sedan like I had when I got married. Had to sell with family on the way. Still love the body style and the Y block motor. Al

Back in the 60s the cost of the 55 -56 were more then 57s.
I owned a 57 that's when the started to get bigger.
