Default 51 Victoria auto transmission shift handle installation

Can anyone provide information as how to reinstall the auto transmission shift handle on the steering column? I can't get the handle to line up and completely insert to allow for the spring loaded pin to line up.

When you look into the shifter housing you should see the hole that the stem fits into.
Also the tang on the stem goes up.

Thank you, I see that, the problem is that the slide mechanism the handle end fits into is spring loaded. It appears that this slide piece must be pushed down and held there before it will line up. Does the steering wheel and turn signal mechanism need to be removed to access to push the slide plate down to align it?

You should still see the hole at the top of it's travel.
Install the shifter as far as it will go then push down on it while pushing in to engage the hole.

Thank you, it went together just as you described. I think I spent a solid two hours earlier trying to get it together, thanks again...
