Unhappy clutch problem

I was driving along in my 47 when I heard a clunking noise near the tranny and lost speed.I eased it to the shoulder, then I heard a louder clunking. It was like I had put it neutrial,it would not engage the clutch.I check the obvious but nothing. What could have broke? Any ideas? If I have to pull the engine to get at the clutch assembly,do I pull the trnny too?

Before you start pulling the engine, etc, check a few things out first. I have had a broken drive shaft and broken axles do the same thing. Although the u-joint is bullet proof that it also a possibly. Can you put the transmission in gear with the engine running? If not , the the clutch or linkage could be the problem. Some folks prefer to pull the rear end and transmission to get to the clutch. Others probably have some other suggestions. It will be interesting to hear what you find.

You could try unhooking one of the shift rods & put the trans in two gears at once, then jack up one wheel & see if the drive shaft will turn while trans is locked. If it turns, then U-joint or drive shaft is broke or the splined coupler is sheared.
