Default Oil Capacity Question

My FoMoCo 49-51 Mercury V-8 Overhaul Manual says the following re: crank case capacity:
Engine Oil:
DRY (including filter).......6 qts.
REFILL..........................5 qts.
I interpret this to mean that when changing both the oil and the filter you refill with 6 quarts. But when you REFILL without changing the filter you refill with 5 qts. Am I correct? Thanks.

Default Re: Oil Capacity Question

I'm confused about this; my 59L has a MCF full flow oil filter kit on it and if i put in 6 quarts, it shows over full. The level on the dipstick settles at the factory full mark with 5 quarts after an oil change. I agree with what your interpretion of the factory manual for your motor, maybe there is a difference in pan capacities between our motors? I got the same info out of the manual for mine.

If you're using a '49-'51 Merc pan, yes.

Definetly is a difference in capacity on these engines.
