Suggested reading for a 1935-36 Model 51 dump truck (guides, manuals, etc.)?
A buddy of mine has a farm in southern NH and is looking into getting the old family farm truck road worthy. I can fix modern vehicles but a restoration of this scale is over my head. Except for the condition, his truck looks exactly like this one:
http://www.hemmings.com/hcc/stories/...feature19.html He has the Woods dump body and I forget if it is a 1935-36. He is just focused on getting the mechanical parts in good working order first. He has a birthday coming up so I am looking for any recommended reading that would be relevant to anything on this truck, even just a general guide to vehicle restoration. It looks like there was an effort by Jerry Grayson to create a restoration guide for 1935 trucks but never came to be. Overall, we are just trying to understand what he has and what it will take to get it rolling safely and legally down the street. Any recommendations of reading or other sources of information will be greatly appreciated! Thank you! |

Fortunately, many of the early big trucks had similar frames and running gear for extended years of production. Job Lot in New York has a lot of early Ford truck specific parts. The 1935/36 chassis parts manual and the commercial vehicle operator's manual would be good starts for a lot of information but it may take you a while to find them in specific years. I've found a lot of original manuals through flea-pay and even Amazon comes up with good used manuals now and then. They may not be heavy on illustrations or photos but you take what you can get. The green bible has many of the part numbers but they tend to be the latest part used and not the original part used but anyone working on an early Ford vehicle should have the 1928 thru 48 chassis parts catalog.
This one might be good: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1928-1936-FO...-/221851260640 This one is probably a reprint: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/1312999...chn=ps&lpid=82 The shop manual might be a good one: http://www.faxonautoliterature.com/1...CD-P13329.aspx Last edited by rotorwrench; 08-26-2015 at 06:47 PM. |

Zuren, In addition to the first 2 books suggested by rotowrench, I would suggest that you get a copy of the body parts list for the wood body dump as well as the parts list for the truck cab.
I can email you copies on PDF files if you send me your email address at [email protected] regards, Don Rogers |

The book Jerry and I were working was 35-36 pickups. No big trucks. The book is on hold for an indeterminate amount of time. The truck in the picture is a 36 by the way.

I have seen some of these dump trucks at EFV-8 Club meets that were restored very nicely. Maybe you could locate some of the folks who own these trucks, in the club roster, and converse with them on your needs.

I believe I have a 35 Truck owner's manual somewhere in the parts bin and I suspect PolyPrints makes an inexpensive reproduction copy. It might not have any details about a dump, but the other information should be applicable.

Zuren, If you by a repro Owners manual for a 35 truck, make sure that it is correct. Some re-sellers are selling a 34 OM and calling it 35. Here is what the 35 and 36 manual should look like.

I have the one Don shows on the right for my 36. I have seen it available on EBay. It is well worth purchasing. Access to the Green Bible parts book is also helpful. It is on the N Ohio V8 club website.

Re: Suggested reading for a 1935-36 Model 51 dump truck (guides, manuals, etc.)?
I am currently restoring a 1934 model BB dump truck. Luckily I did not need anything major and I found that the parts I needed (wiring, lights, gaskets, switches, etc.), were available from the major on-line suppliers for the 1934 pickups. I even have a Model A tube in the bottom of the steering box which prevents oil from entering the light switch. The suppliers, if you tell them what you need, in many cases can cross-reference and supply you with it.
