Man, that just came out wrong!

Looking for some words of wisdom on my speedometer. Checked its accuracy against a GPS the other day, and from 10mph to 50mph it is better than +/- 2mph - which is great!

However..... she sticks occasionally. She will be sitting on "0" and you need to tap the glass to get her moving. Sometimes the vibration from the car is enough to break it free, just not always.

Would you expect the calibration to be lost if I open her up to clean and lubricate?

I have had mine all apart for lubing and cleaning. It didn't work when I bought the car, broken cable and dried grease frozen solid. Its still accurate! Dive in there head first and open it up! However do it over a container so if you drop something you don't lose it! I did mine on mama's kitchen table (clean place to work). Take pics as you pull it apart so you know how to put it back together. Leave the magnet and it shaft in there and it should be accurate. Of course all this advice only applies to a round one if yours is oval your on your own

Oh and never wear a Speedo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys - and it is a round one. I'll heed your advice and carefully dive in.

As for the speedo - my wife would probably divorce me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ovals are pretty simple. I built mine out of two junkers on my kitchen table. It works fine and I was able to set it back to all zeros. According to the new traffic radar speed indicators on the side of the local roads, it's pretty accurate.

I used WD 40 to clean it out and cable lube to keep it quiet.

As far as the cyclists "speedos'... I have a bicycle but speedos wouldn't be suitable for an old bald guy huffing and puffing astride a 1953 Schwinn Black Phantom. Nor would one of those goofy looking helmets. I look silly enough as it is.

About ten years ago while on a four day antique car tour in Pendleton, Oregon with my grandson, my oval speedometer went wild because of the old dried up lubrication in it. At the morning coffee stop, I tore down my speedometer and field stripped it on the picnic table in the park where the tour had stopped at. I lubricated it with the oil dripping from my Model A's dip stick. I put the speedometer back together and it has worked perfectly ever since. I was the first one at the coffee stop and the last one to leave. About 25 minutes was spent on the speedometer. The model A speedometer is an easy one to service.

The speedo on my 30 Tudor is very accurate (oval) but is constantly moving back and forth between 5 miles ahead of speed and 5 mile behind. Is this typical or should it stay true as I accelorate & cruise?

Joe I think you need to lube the cable before it breaks.
