Default POR 15 is NOT for Generators

I'm trying to get this generator apart that someone covered with POR 15. My impact driver couldn't budge the mounting bracket screws, and only tore up the head on one. I can't imagine how much extra time it will take to sandblast the crud off the case. This one looks like they poured POR 15 over the old paint and rust. I really have no use for POR 15, but on generators and carbs, it's really bad.

I have not used this product but would be interested in hearing recommendations on where and where not to use it. Tom says not on generators, or carburators.

What is it about POR-15 that you don't like? I've never used it but was thinking on trying it.

i love it... yea i wouldn't paint it over mounting screws but if you disasemble the items first and paint seperately you wont have stuck parts.

I plan to do my entire frame with it after sandblasting. and stake bed.

Whatever you guys do DONT get it on your skin - it will not come off without time...and a little bit of it goes a long ways, dont treat it like rustoleum.

POR-15 is for frame and suspension/axle painting. Not engine detail.

Tom - When I tore apart the generator on the 28 the first time, I had to drill out those screws and there was no POR15 anywhere on the car. Sometimes, they are just a pain.

Best of luck to you.

Maybe we just discovered "BLACK LOCTITE"! Wish they made it in CLEAR. Before Loctite, on our vibrating old Indian powered 3/4 midjet, we dipped the threads in clear lacquer! & we walked to school in SNOW, this l~~~~~~~l deep! Bill W.

Hi Tom,

A good set up is to use a drill press to apply pressure on a hand made screw driver flat point, (made from a full width spade type wood drill bit), that fits "snugly" in the total width & total length of the screw slot.

My experience it that POR 15 can only be removed effectively with several coats of POR 15 Stripper -- regular paint remover is not at all very effective.

Been successfully using POR 15 products for over 17 years, even in high humidity -- it does not go on like any type of paint -- experienced painters create the largest disasters because of not following detailed manufacturer's instructions -- any small deviation from POR special instructions usually spells a total flop.

Many don't really comprehend POR 15 instructions & give up.

Best example I can think of is to give 50 new soldiers of any age in an Army Field Bakery Unit a recipe to make one (1) light loaf of bread -- when the first 50 loaves come out of the field oven located in a tent, (even though they studied the instructions), 49 of the 50 loaves are usually heavy enough & hard enough to load in a 155 mm Howitzer to penetrate a 48" thick reinforced brick wall -- it takes experience to recognize details surrounding lack of experience -- learned years ago that not everybody has the patience to learn to make good homemade bread by themselves. LOL

Hope this helps in trying POR 15 Products -- takes a while to learn it!

NAW! not really, Blue, I wore braces from Polio & rode an old horse, named "Shorty" to school. He had been trained to kneel down on his front knees, so little kids could climb up on him easily, even bareback! He rode well, even WITHOUT a bridle! Bill W.

No, it was given to me by Mark. I plan to use it for spare parts to fix the one I'm restoring for Mark.

Looks like somebody made a mess!!! The problem isn't the POR 15 . The problem is the previous user . Heat will help remove stuck bolts and parts. POR 15 is a pain to use but works great if the directions are followed exactly. I've had good luck with POR 15. I used it on engine pans and they still look good after over 10 years. POR 15 is gas resistant and should work good on a carburetor but I wouldn't dip one in it. I would take anything apart that I used it on first, otherwise it works similar to Loc tite. POR 15 needs to be kept out of direct sunlight or it fades.

It will soften with laquer thinner and will remove easily. I have removed it before. It is some extremely tough material I use it on frames and anything that is exposed to potential chipping. POR 15 makes products for engines also in original engine colors.

POR 15 is on the internet, they can give you info on it's removal.

I got the messed up screw out using my Vice Grip, but the other screw, that I hoped to save, snapped. I'll try to sandblast the case and then weld a nut to the broken screw and let it cool. Hopefully the heat-cool cycle will loosen it.

Hi Tom,

Nothing like dismantling vintage rusty parts.

Thanks for the instructional generator dismantling update & allowing us to share in your moments of agony that we all experience at one time or another -- it should help to know we appreciate all the information you so generously share.

Seems to me that the guys over on "Yesterday's Tractors" used POR 15 to seal old gas tanks. I've never used it, but I've thought about it a lot. From the "Symptoms" that are discribed, it sounds a lot like Magnet paints, "Chassis saver". Don't get that on your hands either!

I tried to burn the crap off with my propane torch, but by the time I got it hot enough to remove, I'd probably fry the field windings, and it was a slow go anyway. Then I thought I'd try removing it with my knife. It peeled and chipped off quite well with the knife, and saved a lot of sandblasting time.

I welded a washer, then a nut to the broken screw, and it spun out easily.
