Flathead bell housing
I need some information on bell housings. I have what I believe is a 8ba But I need to mount a 39 trans behind it. I have one bell housing now but it doesn't line up on the block side. I will attach some pictures here

What doesn't line up on the block side? That looks like the BH you would need.

Re: Flathead bell housing
Your bell isn't for a flathead V8. Take a picture directly above showing the block mount pattern and maybe we can ID the bell.

Re: Flathead bell housing
Make sure you get a cast one from a truck if you want to run an 11 in. clutch. The stamped steel ones from a Merc won't take the bigger clutch. Also, make sure you get the correct starter plate for the housing.

Re: Flathead bell housing
1966: Be sure and read every single word in the thread below including all the links in the thread. Do this and you will have all your questions answered. I installed an 8BA engine and a 10 inch Ford pressure plate and clutch in my 40 45 years ago and it's still working fine. The same method applies to the 39. The anti-chatter rods set up has to be modified also. If you use the 1949-51 Merc stamped steel bellhousing with matching starter plate you can use the 10 in clutch. 11 in. clutch is overkill.
