You are correct. My next move is to check the timing. Put the engine at #1 TDC and re-set the distributor.

If its back firing look at the spark plugs and see if you have and odd one.
This maybe the one with valve stuck.
Remove the spark plug wire from that cylinder,
Then try and start it. May take few try's to get right one.
You could also have a few stuck valves.
Yes could be cam timing.

Yes, I changed the distributor along with all of its accouterments. Valves are free and working. Still acting the same.

I think you are correct in the timing being off.
Try the TDC and point to #1
It looks like you may have a pressed on cam gear and it may have slipped timing.

That is what I am thinking. Replacing is beyond my pay grade so I am going to have "Putt" Smith work on it for me.

Hello Lawson, just for grins and giggles, run a jumper wire direct from the bat to your coil and see if it starts and runs right. Doing this for a brief period will not cook your coil. This would eliminate everything but coil and below.

It is definitely a timing problem.

I put a new cam in a 350 chebby I had. the timing chain was a double roller, and it has 3 marks to line it up with the dot on the crank. I put it in the wrong one. had one hell of a time to get it started, and when it ran it would spit gas out of the carb and had no power. I could run faster from a stop sine then the car would go. Lawson I hope you fined your trouble soon...Brendan

I am in the process of doing MY LAST THING. I am removing timing gear cover to take a look see at timing gear. If it is aluminum bolt on, I am not sure where to go as that shouldn't give any problems. If fiber, off to the local guru.

I was thinking of your problem. If the cam has slipped your ign would look good.
If there was a key way or some kind of mark to time.
Some how you need TDC and check valve timing. I guess the easy way would be to Remove the head and check valve timing or intake manifold.
Exhaust Valve should be just closed at TDC
Work work I have to remove my engine its got a bearing rap.

Sorry to keep posting. It is a strange problem. I have trouble with the cam being out of time because the compression is OK. The engines with slipped timing chains I have worked on had lost most all compression. Maybe something gave way in the intake manifold. A passage from the exhaust to the intake or a huge vacumn leak would cause havoc. The intake is easier to pull than the front cover also.
