Default Transmission, convert open to closed drive

I have a complete '48-51 truck 3 speed transmission in very good shape that I would like to convert to closed driveline, (torque tube). What do I need besides a different main-shaft and rear mount ? Also, what are the gear ratios of the truck versus the car. I would like to run a 16/28 main drive gear & cluster in a very light roadster. Thank you Fordbarners.

I think the trucks used a 29 tooth cluster gear for lower gearing in low and 2nd. You should have no trouble trading your open drive parts for closed drive, maybe trade complete transmission if distance isn't a problem.

Check the tooth count on the main gear of the 48-51 trans you are wanting to convert. If it is the later type with the larger tooth configuration ( a 27 tooth cluster gear) you will need all of the gears and a main shaft to convert to a closed driveline. The appearance of the tooth size can sometimes be misleading so be careful if you mix and match. Ford changed the gear size in the pickup line in the early 50's. The case and top will work, find a closed drive column shift and make the switch and you'll have your trans.

Good luck, Paul J.

My thoughts on the gear change you're thinking of would be to keep the pickup truck transmission gearing and go for a higher speed ring and pinion such as 3.54 or even 3.25. Better cruising speed in high and still being able to have an easy start from dead stop. But, that's my opinion....

Just my 2 cents. I rebuilt my 46-48 three speed top loader six weeks ago and it had a 28 tooth cluster. Last week I rebuilt my early 50's three speed truck top loader and it had a 27 tooth cluster. Got all parts to rebuild from Mac Van Pelt. All is good with both. Good luck on yours.
