I can't seem to find the specs for the 42-48 brake drum max size. Seems as tho nobody turns drums anymore.
Thanks Ron |

Re: Brake drum spec.
Just had my 34 front drums turned yesterday by O'Reillys in Ft Mohave Az. Can't give any more info than that on you auto parts store. We did have a problem on runout but cured that by installing the bearing races.

Re: Brake drum spec.
Luckily I can still get them turned here, but the quality of the job depends on who at the shop does it. The last set I had turned 2 years ago was done by the youngest one in the shop and cost me twice as much because it took him twice as long as the set done 4 months before by the older guy in the shop. Not sure what he was not doing right. He still did a good job, just not at the cost I was expecting. He said the metal in the drums was very hard. I almost think that the tooling may have been at the wrong angle. Rod

Re: Brake drum spec.
We are lucky to have a couple old school machine shops here in Akron. Finding someone to arc the shoes will probably be a challenge. I was lucky enough to find an old guy who had a grinder.

Re: Brake drum spec.
Ask at a meeting of the local Model A club or Early V8 club where they take their drums to be turned. Also ask about arcing at the same time. You usual find someone with a machine in their garage or small shop.

Re: Brake drum spec.
I would like to note that when the drums are machined out to .060 they don't have to look perfect, a couple of grooves won't make enough difference to notice... Even some pretty big ones...

Re: Brake drum spec.
most places quit arcing shoes a long time ago due to the asbestos in the shoes. there is very little if any in the shoes anymore. so that is no longer the problem that it once was. don't know of any one up here doing it anymore. the last time I saw or used an arcing machine was back in the '70's when I worked at the local Che$%$%y dealership.----Jim

Re: Brake drum spec.
I guess I should consider myself lucky that my buddy down the street has his own Ammco brake lathe. That thing has saved me a ton of $$ over the years.

Re: Brake drum spec.
I haven't used an arc or drum machine since the early 60s. Yesterday I just wrapped some sanding paper to a paint stick to get the linings as close as possible. Someday when this project gets on the road we'll see how good I did.
