Thoughts on 300 inline 6 in 49 Tudor?

Is that big inline 6 300 too large to put into a shoebox? I did originally intend to rebuild my 8ba but the power and parts availability for the 300 is very appealing. Opinions are very appreciated.

I remember seeing several threads about this on the H.A.M.B. You really should be asking over there, because that's what they do. From everything I've read, although you can put anything in anything with enough effort, the 300 is much too long to be practical in a Shoebox. Too bad, because they are good engines.

Totally agree with tubman, the 300 is a good motor. I've done all kinds of swaps in irrelevant machines, but after you make all the adaptions to make it work its not really a 49 Ford any more. There are circumstances where it doesn't matter, but if you have a nice original car why not fix the 8ba?

Well the car isn't a very nice example of a shoebox and I do have a torn apart 8ba. I've been working on another car and have shelved the Tudor for the time being. Guess Im looking for a quick fix to get the car running, its been parked for the last 2.5 years...and Im always looking for something a little different.

If you want help putting the 8BA back together we are the right place.
As Tubman said, if you are looking for advice on how to cut up a firewall to fit a 300 six, the HAMB is a much the place for that.

Quickest, easiest & cheapest fix is a SBC. Nothing fits a shoebox better than an 8BA except a SBC.

I wish I could find that April fools' spoof from the past. It described how GM had designed the small block to mirror the Ford flathead, from the cylinder offset to the engine mounts, oil pan sumps etc. It was a good entertaining read.

There's also an inline ford site. I think I joined a while back. The 300 is a heck of an engine, but I gotta say I drove my H flathead six about 50 miles this afternoon and it's a damn Swiss watch and I made a point of not downshifting on any of the major hills. They come up on CL when people want a FH V8. Yes, big parts aren't readibly available but the tune up stuff sure is. They are not a real flashy powerplant but like my Favorite american watch, they take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. It's ford, It's period correct, it's a bolt in. Or just plain ressurect that 8ba........

Unfortunately I just missed out on a 226 Inline 6 flathead for $700 with the trans. Appeared to be a very nice looking setup. I'll keep my eyes open...

Make sure it's an H model, not the G with the front distributor. More parts availability and correct for your shoebox.

The quick/fast fix for a Shoe Box Ford in the mid to late '50's was a Cad V8.. Ergo the FORD-A-Lac was born.. The early Cad OHV engines were about the same size as the SBC. The cars that had Cad engines in the mid/late '50's always gathered up a large crowd at the BOB'S BIG BOY Drive-Ins in Burbank, Van Nuy's,etc.
