Default Dry Vega Steering Box

Checked the gear oil in my Saginaw Vega steering box, which was put-in years ago before I owned the car. Removed a cover bolt and used a long allen wrench as a dipstick. Box is dry, no gear oil. But the dipstick comes back with a bit of pink colored grease on the tip, where it touched gears or bottom of case. The pink stuff is thick like grease, not gear oil.

Any idea what that pink grease is? Any idea on what grease/oil I should add to the box?

Know nothing about pink grease. I'd flush the box as good as possible and refill with John Deere corn head grease.
