Default Temperature gauge replacement 1938 ford

I am planning on changing my temperature gauge for one that works.
I check the replacement one and it works great. Put it in boiling water and it went to the etched line on the glass.
Any special tricks or sequence to replacing the gauge. Looking for tips before I turn upside down and practice yoga under the dash.

Hi, Just done a 39 , remove the old one and plug the hole ,remove the rubber O ring at the cowl .,I had to file the new brass bit to go in the hole so have a plug handy or you lose water .Lay on your back between the seat ,head about at the gear shift ,with a stubby screw driver remove the two /or three screws .Ted

Is there a special gasket to seal the unit in the head?
Or is it a metal to metal seal. I was going to use plumbers paste or Teflon tape on the threads.

Is ther suppose to be a thermowell for the probe to go into? Or does the probe go directly into the coolant? Or is there a seal or grommet that goes around the tubing to seal between that and the threaded bushing?

The probe is sealed into the head via a 45 degree seat; the nut merely holds it down. These things are very delicate! I always liberally apply anti-seize compound to the probe and nut and just 'nip' it down sufficient to stop it leaking. This will definitely make subsequent removal much easier.
