1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
I recently picked up a 34 5 window Coupe. All original to my knowledge.. it is not the deluxe model, and it has the 4 cylinder engine. This makes it a Model B? The previous owner told me the car is rare, with some online research some suggest it may be one of 20 made with the 4 cyl for 1934 in a 5 window Coupe. Does anyone know more about the rarity of this car? What's it worth in original condition?

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
While it is rare relative to a '34 V8 five-window, the previous owner was somewhat misinformed about the number of four-cylinder five-window coupes produced. In the U.S., 61 standard model and 4 deluxe model five-window coupes were produced during the '34 model year prior to April, 1934 when fours were no longer offered as an alternative to the V8 in the U.s. The total worldwide production would be significantly higher (statistically speaking).
The interest in '33-'34 fours is limited compared to the V8 versions so all other things being equal, it would likely be worth less than a V8 counterpart in the same condition. Some potential buyers will have in mind converting to a V8, the fate of many '33-'34 four-cylinder passenger cars such as the four-cylinder '34 roadster i once owned. |

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
You may want to buy the Early Ford V8 Club's 33-34 Restoration book. It will answer many of your questions and is a great reference to have. I used to have a Dearborn blue 34 Sedan Delivery but I'm sorry I don't remember all the colors and which ones were available on the standard models. DavidG certainly knows.

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
The '34 model color choices for standard passenger cars like your coupe were: all black (called Medium Luster black), Dearborn blue with black fenders and gas tank cover, etc., Cordova Gray (all over), Vineyard green (all over), and Coach maroon (either with black fenders, etc. or all over)

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
The car starts up and runs great, but as soon as you give it gas it starts to stall. It has fresh gas, new lines, new fuel filter. Could it be the carburetor? What carburetor came on the 4 cyl? Where can I get a carburetor kit?

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
I'm not sure if the 4 cyls. still used Zenith carbs after 1932. Possibly some other like Tillotson ? Either way, I'm sure there are kits or parts available for what ever carb you have.

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
Hi there, make sure you understand how that 1934 ford 4 cyl carb works. The choke knob on the dash pulls out to choke the engine but also rotates left and right to adjust the mixture on the carb. Usually starting the car you have to rotate the choke knob about half a turn anticlockwise to richen up the mixture. When she warms up a little then turn the knob clockwise to lean off the mixture until she runs smooth. Warmed up this control will be turned fully clockwise or closed off. This is somewhat different to a model A setup which has to be open anticlockwise a little bit when warmed up. Best idea would be to get a reprint on the 1932 ford service instructions (red cover) which explains all of this. The 1934 ford instructions only show V8 engines and carb which does not have this mixture adjustment. Regards, Kevin.

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
Any 34 Ford 5 window coupe a is wonderful car. If I had it I would sell the "C" engine to a Model A guy and put a 21 stud 85 HP V8 in it and enjoy it as a V8 car. The Model C engine was a real fancy and fast Model A thing carried to extremes in 1934. Take a look at the 1934 Ford 3 window with fender skirts on the cover of the current V8 Times. Hard to imagine a better looking car.
Update: My apologizes to all you 4 cylinder guys. I've been a 34 Ford V 8 guy for 44 years with a few Model A's at times. I never owned a 4 cylinder Ford built after 1931, because Henry Ford convinced me the V8 was better. I think he was right as did Bonnie & Clyde. For all the restored 34's with the 4 cylinders, I thank you for your restorations, as I said in my original post "Hard to imagine a better looking car". Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
Hi Paul Dobbin, Boy ! am I pleased that you don't own that quite rare original 1934 5 window 4 cylinder coupe. Just to satisfy your ego for a bit more power you would ruin the originality and history of a rare now motor car. I just don't understand really why you would want to put a V8 into it. Maybe you want to cruise a 70 MPH on the freeway to keep up with the modern traffic. That's the trouble with many people who just want to improve cars rather than preserve their original factory build for histories sake. Anyway just to be nice to you, your avatar 34 sedan looks very nice, I bet its a V8. I have one very similar in RHD though. Regards, Kevin.

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
We cruise in our 28 ccpu with the A engine and no OD at about 45/50 mph,
We cruise in our 33 and 34 3w coupe both v8,s at about 50/55, Stay with the 4cyl engine, There is a lot of things to change over to fit the V8 in, Lawrie |

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
Here is the current status of my 33 5 window Deluxe B Model.
Supposedly 1 of 27, matching chassis and engine sequence (last 6 digits match), body, chassis and engine bell housing original to each other. By the way, I want to safely do 70 MPH on the open highway |

Re: 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe
Here's my '33 Canadian four-banger which I specifically held out for as body-colored fenders were a regular production option, unlike in the U.S. I've V8s, but both have their virtues.
