Gererator question
I am thinking of getting a
Powergen alternator that looks like the old style generator. Blurb below states they put out 75 amps and idle at 65 amps. With my limited knowledge of electricity, is this tooooo high for a normal voltage regulator, or does one have to change the regulator also. Seems I have read that the voltage regulators operate at 35 amps but perhaps I am missing something and hence he question. I dont want to be missing my wire loom if iam wrong. thanks Frederic These high-tech alternators are made to look like a semi-stock generator, but give you the reliability of an alternator. They all have 75 amps output & idle at 60 amps. |

Re: Gererator question
I'm sorry I don't have the answer to your question, but keep this in mind:
With a charged battery, you are not going to get 60 to 70 amps. The output will depend on battery voltage and current draw. I'm thinking a 6 volt wiring system will easily handle what it will be putting out. |

Re: Gererator question
The voltage regulator controls the output depending on the load. 75 amps is the maximum output of that alternator. An alternator use a different type regulator.

Re: Gererator question
I heard they had internal regulators and did not require an external regulator, is that correct? Where do you buy them?

Re: Gererator question
My question is what is the official definition of "...look like a semi-stock generator"?

Re: Gererator question
The voltage regulator (black box) it's not only a Voltage regulator its also a Current regulator (Amp) and have a cutout function.
The voltage regulator see to it that the voltage going to the battery wont go higher than around 8 volt for a six volt system , and around 14 volt for a 12 volt system. The Current regulator see to it that there is not more than 30 amps drawn from the Ford standard generator, otherwise it will burn up caused by the heat created. The cut out prevents current going backwards from the battery to the generator when the engine is turned off. The Powergen alternator will put out around 14 volt and the current needed up to 75 amp. The bottleneck in the Ford electrical system will be the 30 amp amp gauge. I replaced mine with a volt meter, and have been driving my Powergen alternator for a couple of thousands miles without any problem. And friend of mine have driven his even more. The drawback is that it does not look 100% acurate. |

Re: Gererator question
I hear the Power generators aren't so good i'm calling Ed Whitney next week for a quote on a alternator 6 volt pos ground.
