Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
Hey just wanted to get everyones opinion. I have purchased those acorn nuts for the heads of my flathead and found that they have a lot of slop or play when installed. Anyone know a good way to keep those from falling off with using super glue?? I am not sure I am going to use them but have heard some crazy stories about using aluminum foil and stuff. Thanks

Re: Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
I used a clear silicon caulk on mine. I just put a small amount on top of each nut, and pressed on the acorn nut. With a little bit of wiggling, they come off pretty easy when you have to remove them.

Re: Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
Just put some RTV in the top. They will come off if you pry them from the base . Frank pkny

Re: Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
The dab of silicon works well if they're relatively loose. If they're just a little loose a gentle tap with a hammer will deform them enough to be tight on two surfaces and not distort them enough to be evident to the eye.

Re: Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
I hit them with a centerpunch on one side. Then I install them so the punched side is not visible.

Re: Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
Hmmm...I must have a different brand. I had to tap mine on with a hammer. They're not coming off. In fact, I wouldn't know how them off if I wanted to...maybe heat...dunno

Re: Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
I've used two methods with relatively good results. Deforming by lightly tapping one side with a hammer, as has been suggested and using several thicknesses of heavy aluminum foil as an internal shim. Deforming the caps is far easier and just as effective. FWIW.

Re: Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
They fit tighter on old stock bolts than the newer bolts. Some still need squizing a lilltle to tighten them.

Re: Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
I agree with imnezrider, mine were hard to get on, also I do have the original head nuts and they are painted.

Re: Flathead Engine - Acorn Nuts
To remove them heat the tip of a small and short flathead screw so that and bend it so it has a slight curve on the tip. Then file the tip down thinner so it will slip under the acorn nut cover and gently pry it up at several locations around the hex shape. It's sort of like a curved miniature pry bar.
