Hotter plug, less carbon?
After my own research turned up nothing on the subject, I hope some one here can help. I am running 3 X 2's on a stock, 39 V8. It, as they all do with this setup, runs rich which creates a carbon build up. If I run hotter plugs (eg. H12 ) will that help with this problem?
Thank you, Phil Last edited by 39topless; 04-01-2015 at 09:24 AM. |

Re: Hotter plug, less carbon?
How would running lean create a carbon build up? this would be from oil in the cyl or too rich

Re: Hotter plug, less carbon?
Double agree. And that's an awful lot of carburetion for a 221 cubic inch engine

Re: Hotter plug, less carbon?
three carbs should create an awful lot of black carbon from to much gas for the engine, hotter plugs might help, but go to far and you may get pre ignition

Re: Hotter plug, less carbon?
You may want to contact Charlie Schwendler, NY (if your running 94's) or Max Musgrove, UT (if your running Strombergs)and ask them about jets and power valve sizes to see if you can get the engine leaned out. Yes a hotter plug will burn a bit cleaner but there are limits. What type of linkage are you running? Progressive? If so the front and rear carbs are just dumpers and have to have some work done to them to remove their idle circuits.

Now that's a plug of a different color!

Re: Hotter plug, less carbon?
I get a rich plug test if I check plugs after it isn't shutdown after a hard pull. I have 2 ecg"s with [ 51 jets, I think?] on my 3/3/4 by 3.5/16 Runs good on the road .

Re: Hotter plug, less carbon?
What kind of linkage, straight or progressive? Had a friend run 3x2 straight linkage. Carboned up so bad that the accumulation of crud broke a valve head off and beat up the valve area as it rattled around loose. Destroyed the block of a good engine. Beware.
Just go for the looks. Run off the center and dummy up the ends. |

Re: Hotter plug, less carbon?
You're welcome. Just noticed that you are in Colorado. Be sure to tell whoever you get jets from your elevation.
I run a 48 in the middle with 2 blocked off 97's at the ends. Originally I had stock jets in the 48 but Max recommended me others that jetted it more like a 97. Helped a lot. |
