35/36 Ford Fuel Pump Gasket Material
I'm currently trying to determine where and what to purchase for material
that will be resistive to our problem gas. I need to make a couple of fuel pump cover gaskets and have been told cork gaskets are the way to go. However, I've been unable to purchase anything locally to use. I just talked with Joe at Joe's Antique Parts in Uxbridge and he has nothing for a gasket that will fit the non glass bowl type pumps. What might the offerings be from some of you that have already traveled down this road? Peter |

Peter, Charlie NY should be able to sort you out if you get stuck.
How ever I normally make my own, you should be able to source some alcy resistant cork/neoprene sheet material, you can cut it with scissors in lew of a cutter. Martin. |

Re: 35/36 Ford Fuel Pump Gasket Material
There are two sizes of pumps and gaskets ,33 to 35 about 2" and after that 2,1/4" this takes the lager gasket the same as the glass bowl that can be readily sourced .Ted .

Re: 35/36 Ford Fuel Pump Gasket Material
Neoprene is not compatible with gasoline and alcohol. What I did was go to a bearing house and get buna-nitrile rubber o ring size 2 1/4 OD by 1/8". they come in a pack of 10 for about $6. This is the correct material and fits right in the pump cover. No more shrinking cork due to the alcohol. A lot of fuel pump problems are result of cover gasket leaking. Not from gas leaking out as much as the vacuum leak which will not draw gas from the tank. Be careful in choosing rubber material for fuel. A lot of materials are good in gasoline but will fail in alcohol and the other way around. Even silicone is a bad choice in some applications
Bearing houses have all the zillion sizes of O-rings for very little money. No need to go to the hardware store, they won't have the size you need. Just my opinion Floyd |

Re: 35/36 Ford Fuel Pump Gasket Material
I believe there is more than one type of neoprene, and some ate alcy/gas resistant.
There must be as I haven't had a shrinkage issue with it. Silicon is always a bad idea with gas, it swells up like a Big jelly octopus when it gets gas on it. Just check that the gasket material is ok for alcy/gas. I've found the regular bearing shop type washers are generally a bit hard and won't seal in a situation where a cork based type will. Just my experience. Martin. |

There are several real good materials available intended for chemicals but the downside is they all cost |

Re: 35/36 Ford Fuel Pump Gasket Material
Thanks to all that responded to my gasket question. I'm quite surprised that
no one is producing the proper material and gasket size for our fuel pumps. Seems like there's a large need for it. Peter |

Contact Charlie Schwendler, in NY he most likely has them as well as Ken, CT. There is not a lot of room for error when cutting these out of sheet cork material ($$$). Best to use the proper gasket cutting tool for circles, or buy the gaskets cut.

Re: 35/36 Ford Fuel Pump Gasket Material
Here is what I got at the local parts house...
Fel-Pro Part No. 3018 Packaging says... Cork-Rubber, 10" x 26" x 1/16" "For Sealing oil, water, or GASOLINE" I've cut a few gaskets out of it, and it seems to work ok. Can you use 1/16 material ? 10 x 26 is more than a lifetime supply for me. Would you like me to send you some to try? Try a PM. Of course, I like the "Charlie, NY" suggestion - he probably has just what you need, already cut. Last edited by bobH; 07-02-2015 at 10:46 AM. |

Re: 35/36 Ford Fuel Pump Gasket Material
I have tried the O ring deal it may depend on quality as they can swell and adsorb gas and end up larger, The neoprene cork mix is a good material to use .Its a good idea to test the finished pump with a vacuum gauge for leaks .The vapour lurks .Ted1

Roy Nacewicz shows the gasket in his online catalog. www.fordbolts.com.
