Default 40-41 pu tailgate

I am fixing up a 41 pick up, and have a pretty rough tailgate. I read in original Ford sales literature that the 'rolled' top of the tailgate is tapered. As mine is badly battered it is hard to determine. Does anyone have a pic or a description of this in original form. This is an American deck. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks, Gordon.

Mack Hills in Moberly MO. All years of early Ford tailgates manufactured there.

To answer the question, yes, the top rail was tapered. The reproduction tailgates from Northern Classic (now out of business) were tapered as the originals. I know how he did that which was tricky. Not sure if the Mack tailgates are tapered.

Mine is original although a little banged up along the top. It appears that the top roll was/is straight across the top , bottom and inside but bows outward. This would give it more strength when it's bearing a load in the down (flat to extend the bed length) position. Tim
