F-1 door weatherstripping problem
Just finishing my 49 F-1 and placed the weather seals around the doors. They look great but I cannot get the doors closed. The Carpenter rubber seems too thick. Anybody else experience this problem and how did you correct it. I hate to just pull em off, then I have all that black adhesive to get off.

Re: F-1 door weatherstripping problem
I had the same problem when we did our '51 F-1, the rubber is too thick... I've just gotten used to pushing/pulling hard on the doors when I close them.

Re: F-1 door weatherstripping problem
I appreciate your post. My still new F1 door seals didn't get used for the same reason. I substituted a half-oval seal material (5/8" as I recall) with less than total satisfaction.

Re: F-1 door weatherstripping problem
I have not had one rubber product for my F-1 fit correctly, and that comment includes several vendors. I'd hate to say it, but I'm glad I saw this thread. I guess I'll just be trying to preserve the original ones.

Re: F-1 door weatherstripping problem
Check with your local automotive paint store. 3M does make a solvent that will remove the glue without harming the paint. Use gloves when you use it.

Re: F-1 door weatherstripping problem
I got door seals from DC in 2008 for the '51 F-1 and they were a perfect fit and air and water tight. A gentle close and click they were closed. Maybe they are using a new pattern now.

Re: F-1 door weatherstripping problem
I don't know if this will help, but last year we replaced rubber the toe board seals on our '36 and the new ones were oversize and wouldn't allow the boards to sit down as they should.
My friend suggested trying a tool he got from Harbor Freight. It''s a small air driven belt sander.By small, I'd guess the belt was 1" wide and the loop or travel it went around was about 7". The item # is 97055. and costs $19.95. Now you wouldn't think you could accurately carve away foam rubber, but it worked like a charm. Its smallness allowed excellent control and the high speed meant it did not grab the rubber. It wasn't unlike if you had an electric carving knife. It ground off the surface very nicely - though with a lot of rubber residue flying around. Again, don't know it will work in your application, but it sure got us out of a sticky situation. Regards Henry |
