pulling engine?

Question about pulling the engine from my 29. Is there any difference in pulling the engine with the transmission attached versus unbolting the bell housing and leaving the transmission in the chassis? It might be six of one or a half dozen of another. Personal preference?

Always chose to pull the engine & trans as a unit as it is easier to install as a unit vs having to line up the trans while reinstalling the engine.

Seemed easier to turn the U-joint to align the splines to the torque tube than trying to turn the trans to align the input to the clutch.

Others may have a different ideas for this process.

In the other hand, removing the engine and trans together means having to remove the shift tower, disconnecting the brake pedal from the rods and probably removing the pedals too to be safe, undoing those 6 bolts on the clamshell over the u-joint (which are a real pita to replace if you're going to use the castle nuts and cotter pins) and having to deal with nearly a couple hundred extra pounds on the end of your engine crane. You'll likely have to remove the headlight cross bar too because the extra length of the unit will make it hard to bring it over the bar.

I watched your video. Good info. The only difference I see is the u-joint cover in my car has an unusual feature that will not be any problem. Pic posted of this difference.

If it is just an engine issue, I leave the transmission in and only pull the engine. Why create more work. In my opinion, it is a lot easier to get the engine back in and aim the transmission input shaft for the clutch and pilot bearing than it is to deal with all the things you need to do to undo and redo the brakes, clutch and the u-joint clamshell. Besides, a few expletives always helps that input shaft go in.

I find it a lot easier and faster to pull and reinstall an engine without the bell house and transmissioin hanging on the back end.

I just pull the engine. When i am reinstalling the engine I jack up the tranny a little and install the engine by turning the engine over with a 1 5/16 socket to get the clutch splines to match.

In my opinion, it is easier to pull just the engine and leave the transmission in the car. Use a floor jack to raise the transmission to make it easier to remove and install the engine. Use long studs in the flywheel housing to help align the engine when installing it. Put the car in high gear and turn the engine to align the splines.

I've pulled and installed engine-only twice, so I like that method, too.

I vote for engine only. Also I remove the headlight bar and the bumper. Makes it a heck of a lot easier to move around and work on it.
