looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
What types of voltage testers are you guys using ??? What is the simplest one to give you the answer you're looking for ??
I have a couple that are way too complicated, setting OHM readings and AMPS and all these other dials and knobs that have to be calibrated everytime I use them...........I just want a simple voltage tester for the 6 volt Model "A" electrical system. |

I have several digital meters but I still use my 35 year old Pierce/Simpson 260P.

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
I use a Fluke 322, very good meter, and easy to use. Also will take a lot of abuse.

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
I find an cheap analog type works better as the digitals are subject to the ignition interference. They are harder to read however.

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
Try a FLUKE brand. They even come with a great carrying case that attachs to your belt if desired. They have a wide range of models, but they are great, even for a novice like me...
They are on the higher side of the scale but they aren't just good for auto work, they work on all your electrical needs and are fairly easy to learn to use. Mine is a model 902. GOOD LUCK... Last edited by bobpo; 01-16-2012 at 09:55 PM. |

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
Odds are the one you get cheap a Harbor Freight will do the job.
I like the Fluke hand held units, they take abuse and keep on working. If you have some idea of what you are doing a nice old Simpson is a great meter. (yes I have one of those too). The analogs do not like to be hooked up backwards and can be hurt with a reverse connection. Having a meter that beeps with continuity is VERY helpful when checking where wires go. The modern digital ones are general pretty good for what you will need. If you are not very familiar with electronics then you just need one that will get you in the ballpark, plus or minus a few tenths of a volt. Cheap ones may break over time. One of my two Harbor Freight units stopped working between uses. It worked when I put it in the drawer and did not work the next time I used it. |

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
It sounds like you have an analog meter that requires you to find the correct scale to read. If that doesn't work for you then you need a digital unit. You probably would do fine with a very inexpensive import but I can't say for sure.
I use both an old analog VOM and an older Fluke 111 multi-meter (which is pretty basic) depending on my needs. However even my basic Fluke probably cost 8-10 times (years ago) the price of a current Harbor Freight import multi-meter so the Fluke meters certainly aren't geared towards the casual user.

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
Here is one of my favorites for a quality inexpensive meter. It also has a buzzer for checking continuity, and battery checks for dry cells and 9 volt batteries.

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
I use a cheap analog as most digitals try to follow fast changes
in current and show nothing reasonable. Last edited by Christoph; 01-17-2012 at 06:38 AM. |

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
I use a Simpson 260 7P and a Fluke 179. Neither are cheap but they are very accurate. The Fluke 179 is also very fast and will follow fast voltage changes.

I use a Mastech M9704 that has both analog and digital displays - very handy. It's an import, but costs less than $50. Available online from Amazon and others

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
This HF model is the best $4.99 meter you can buy:
http://www.harborfreight.com/7-funct...ter-90899.html It is reasonably sturdy, and unlike some of the really cheap little analog meters, the test leads are fairly heavy and safe, and have molded connectors. Doug

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
Guess I'm one of the few here who doesn't even trust what a cheap $50 meter tells me.

Re: looking for a decent accurate VOLTAGE TESTER...
Depends on what I am working on, the Model A and non-ECU cars I use a lightweight analog VOM like what Tom Wesenburg suggested. If I'm unsure of the voltage I start with the higher ranges. Digital flickers too much for a glance type readings.

Cheapo harbor freight digital for most of my stuff, cheapo radio shack analog if working on the A while it is running.

As a 30 year automotive instructor and a prior test equipment trainer i vote for the Harbor Freight. Cen Tech as well.
I own many meters fluke, lab scopes etc but for the common guy the Cen Tech works just fine. |

I like my very old Weidenhoff analog AVR that I picked up for $20 at a swap meet.
