Default Ring and pinion placement

I have my rear axle disassembled and replacement parts ordered. Embarrassingly enough, I can't remember which side the ring goes. Right (passenger side) or left of the pinion?
Also, can I assemble the drive shaft tube to one bell and see where I am for pinion depth tracking on the ring? That seems like an easy way to do it if it works.

That is a good way to end up with a two speed reverse. Are you sure about that Royce?? I always put the ring on the left housing.

Just do a mental picture of the shaft turning in the same direction as the crank.(reverse pedal reverses the revolution)
Turning in a clockwise direction as the crank does, this pushes down on the front side of the large ring gear if it is mounted on the drivers side. This down push goes out to the axles and they push the wheels in the same direction. (front of wheel going downward means forward to me)
I understand that more than one model T has tested the back garage wall when the low gear pedal was depressed on a new repair job.
I was talking US with driver sitting on the left side, not RHD cars.

I highly recommend that you get this book before proceeding with assembly:
http://www.modeltford.com/item/RM7.aspx

I followed its instructions when I rebuilt my rear end last winter. You can't go wrong if you follow its instructions.
