Question 1946 Ford Flathead 59Block

I have a 1946 Ford Flathead with raised number 59 on the bell housing. I would like to know what kind of heads will fit on this Ford flathead Block ? I have (59AB) heads , I have ( A ) heads , I have ( GAE-O ) heads . The water jacket holes in the center of the heads are all different sizes. Does the different size water jacket ( hole diameter ) make a difference on how hot the flathead gets ?

Choice of heads may be a matter of what car it may be used it. The engine was introduced at the end of the war (as WWII). The 59A heads were soon replaced with a slightly changed 59A-B to clarify that the heads were to be used on either side. The A-B seems to be the most common by far and the engine is popularly but wrongly known as the 59A-B. Usually nobody cares and everyone knows what you mean. On most '46 engines the 59A would be more correct, but the A-B followed. Good Luck: Fred A

As far as what heads will fit?? Any 24 stud head will bolt on. The early 39-41 will give the highest CR but some clearancing for the top of the valves is necessary. Even the 8BA style will fit if you plug a few holes. use the gaskets for the style head..
