Not to hijack this thread but has anyone used one of Drake's kit in a '40 pickup? They are on sale right now with free shipping. Thinking about biting the bullet and getting one but don't know whether to go with Drake's kit or the one from Newport. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

are you talking about the dual wiper conversion? if so be prepared to almost eleminate your glove box, learning to adjust the linkage is an art in itself and you must tighten it really well or it will change the arc of the wiper on the windshield--would I put another one on---no, I will just go with rainx or sum such as that

Instead of putting in an electric wiper in my 41 pickup I had the original vacuum one rebuilt. It works perfect and cost about $80.

I used a motor from a VW beetle in place of the vacuum unit on my 41 pickup. Used a two position rotary switch. Works like a dream and very easy to adapt. Of course this is a single wiper and the system is 12 volt.

Yes, the dual wiper conversion. A P/O installed 2 individual motors 12 volt single speed motors but they have gone to wiper heaven. I thought about 2 new universal motors both I hear from some of the early Bronco guys that use 2 separate motors that its hard to keep them both in sync when running both on a single switch.

The Newport wiper connects to the stock wiper transmissions with the stock linkage. I had mine mocked up and everthing thing looked OK, but it's all in boxes again now. I remember everything was pretty close. Can you post any pictures of the interference?

I'm curious where to find a "newport wiper" system . It sounds like the easiest system to deal with . Thanks , Mick

Hey guys... slow down as there is an "apple" and "orange" discussion going on.

1940 Passenger wiper system is totally different than 1940-47 Pickups.

1940 Passenger (as the car guys know) has the wiper motor mounted to the firewall, and a linkage rod transmission to remote wiper towers mounted on the cowl. Newport Engineering makes a bulletproof US 12 volt motor, we have sold several over the years without any problems, Drake and Vintique make the towers.

1940-47 Pickup (at the truck guys know) uses a motor with a direct shaft that mounts under the dash. A right side wiper would be a separate motor. The two blades were never sychronized. Newport offers a kit with a single motor and a dual wiper transmission, I dont know if there are any interference issues or not.

My fault for hijacking the thread. Thanks for all the good info on both systems.

This is the best photo I have of the unit I put in a 40 car. I'll look up the supplier and post it tonight or Saturday.
It's busy behind the dash in that area.

I can't find the invoice for this 12 volt wiper set up sorry. The install was not a big problem though. I installed it while the dash was out of the car which helped.
One important thing about the switch though is to avoid pushing the on/off knob fully onto the shaft. The shaft moves slightly inward when rotated and will not turn if the knob is fully home. I made a tiny grommet out of something soft that would compress under the knob during actuation and fill the gap otherwise.
It's also advisable not to install the wiper arms until you are certain that adjustments are complete and the arms will not rotate off the glass and onto the painted cowl.
For final testing tape some cloth around the wiper blade/arm until your happy with the sweep of the arms.

I am having the same problem with the bob drake motor and tower arms. As you can see in the attached picture, the passenger side tower arm is rubbing on the cowl linkage a tiny bit. Any advise on solving this problem? Can I do a slight bend on the arm to allow for clearance or is there another solution I'm not seeing? Thanks, Troy
