Default 32 3W quarter panel sound deadening

When I took my 32 3W apart back in the late 70s I removed a thick cardboard panel that was glued to the inside of each quarter panel. Each panel followed the outline of the quarter panel. Was this factory original sound deadening or a post production effort by someone to reduce noise?

I should add that it came in two different textures of cardboard, plain and noticeably textured similar to the deck lid liners on later Fords of the '30s, often on the same car.

Thanks David, I thought you would have the answer. When I removed them one was seriously deteriorated and could not be saved. I was able to save the driver side as a pattern. It must be the plain version, I don't see any evidence of a surface texture. Good thing, I'm about to cut and install replacements. Any equivalent in the cowl? Thanks

Nothing in the cowl except the hard felt strips tacked on the ends of the #1 floorboard that are often long gone and as a result overlooked in a restoration. Their purpose is different as well as they seal off the flow of outside air that otherwise passes through along the sides of the #1 board, sort of doubling the coverage provided by proper fitting mats or carpets.

David would the Canadian built 1932 cars have this sound deadening fitted and would it have made any difference.

All of the '32 deluxe coupes that I've owned over the years have been U.S. manufactured by Murray Corporation of Detroit, but I see no reason for the deluxe coupe bodies of Canadian Top & Body Corp., Limited of Tilbury, Ontario, a Murray affiliate, to be any different.

As we will never know what combination of speed and road conditions that led to the addition of those quarter panel liners, we can only conclude that they were thought to make a difference, especially given the propensity of Ford towards frugality.

Tom,
What material (and the source) are you using to replace the panels?

John,
I have a piece of hard black cardboard, measures 32" X 48" about 1/8" thick. I bought it years ago at Hershey, it's known as upholstery board. When I bought I had this repair in mind. I can cut both panels from the one piece. I would not know where to get it today.

Tom,
Thanks. I've seen similar material in the past so I probably can find something that'll work.
